Our Ethos

a farm first

Staying away from home isn’t always easy on the environment. At Sakura Ridge, we strive to minimize our footprint by choosing sustainable products and practices that respect the planet.

Pear and apple orchards at Sakura Ridge

Thornless blackberries frame the berry patch and Mt. Hood

Our certified organic orchard is a main feature of Sakura Ridge, and it compels us to respect the land. The lodge sits among nearly 4,000 organic apple and pear trees, and we tend to a bounty of organic berries and vegetables. To reduce food waste, kitchen scraps are composted, and choice morsels are given to our egg-laying hens.

We walk a delicate line between luxury and sustainability. We despise single-use plastics, so we’ve chosen reusable glass water bottles as well as durable Heath ceramics for your morning coffee or tea. Art and furnishings in the building are recovered and refreshed, including antique rugs and Japanese tansus from the 18th and 19th centuries.

When it’s necessary to buy new, we do our best to select local, responsibly produced products. All our bolsters and pillows were handwoven by a skilled artist in nearby White Salmon, WA. To avoid plastic, disposable items like toothbrushes and cotton swabs are biodegradable. Shampoo, conditioner, and body wash are of the highest quality ingredients, but unlike many large hotels, we opt for refillable containers. Our bed frames are sustainably grown cherrywood from here in Oregon, and we even sourced organic mattresses. We believe in high quality that lasts, which you’ll feel it in our sumptuous towels and linens.

Cheryl Lubbert and Jim Gerlach

After taking ownership of Sakura Ridge in late 2021, owners Cheryl and Jim invested months renovating the Lodge while preserving its timeless beauty. They worked with partners to build with low-impact materials like bamboo, cork, and recycled paperstone. In bathrooms, we used a Japanese limestone plaster that cleans easily without the need for harsh chemicals. Our power needs are supplied through solar and geothermal energy.

We invite you to visit Sakura Ridge knowing that we’re committed to making your stay as environmentally sound as possible. The sanctity of this space is special to us, and we’re excited to share it with you.
